Zouk is a style of dance and music that has gained popularity around the world for its fluidity, sensuality and emotional connection. Below, we will explore its origins, main characteristics, fun facts and other relevant aspects. In addition, we include a summary table with key information to make it easier to understand.

Origin of Zouk

The term “zouk” means “party” in French Creole and has its roots in the Caribbean islands, specifically Martinique and Guadeloupe, during the 1970s. Originally, it referred to a musical genre created by the band Kassav’, which mixed Caribbean rhythms such as gwo ka, biguine and cadence-lypso, with modern influences.
On the dance side, the zouk as we know it today evolved from the Brazilian lambada in the early 1990s. Dancers adapted the lambada to be danced to zouk music, resulting in a fusion that eventually became a unique style.
