Best places to stay in Tulum
Knowing about Tulum in advance helps, so I’ve created this comprehensive Tulum Travel Guide to help you choose amongs the best places to stay in Tulum. The little hippie chic boho village has to be one of Mexico’s more “non-Mexican” destinations but still worth visiting.
About Tulum
Mexico is an amazing country with culture, food, music, beautiful beaches and wonderful people.
Tulum can be divided into Tulum town (pueblo) and Tulum beach (playa) where you will find on both sides the best places to stay in Tulum.
Tulum Beach is the stretch of businesses and hotels along the beach with a main road running its entire length. It’s full of upscale beachfront hotels and restaurants, all with incredibly creative vibes. The town of Tulum is set back from the beach, cheaper, with more of the local Mexican authenticity.
How many days in Tulum?
It depends on the time and money you have, 5 days should be the minimum to be able to experience a variety of cenotes, ruins, different food and have time to relax on the beach. If you only have 3 or 4 days, visit the cenotes near town and maybe stay on the beach.
Best places to stay in Tulum
Specialty Lodging near Pueblo de Tulum
Tulum on a budget <$ 60
The Free Hostel Inn – Great budget, shared amenities, close to the beach and town, free use of bicycles, best for solo travelers.
Hotel Scarlette – Lots of space, perfect for an affordable family price around $ 50 a night, technically not in the pueblo, but still not on the beach.
Hotel Casa Santiago – Very nice hotel and pool, in the pueblo for around $ 50- $ 60 / night.
Tube Tulum – For a unique hostel experience, check out these tube style rooms.
Mid-range $ 60 to $ 200
Biwa Tulum – A rooftop pool, more modern vibe, and great reviews.
Ginger – Nothing fancy, low end, great location in town and well-priced with a pool.
Hotel Coco Hacienda – More tropical setting and good price.
Tulum Luxury> $ 200
Azura Boutique Hotel – This is more of an apartment in the center of Tulum, but beautiful. Honestly if you’re spending that much, I see no reason to stay in town rather than on the beach, but this place would be nice if you wanted a little more space and a kitchen to cook.
Where to sleep on the beach of Tulum
Affordable Tulum Beach <$ 100
Pal Mar Glamtainer – This is a lovely container apartment in the hotel zone. There is even air conditioning.
Posada del Sol Tulum – Reviews aren’t very high, but for the beach it’s quite affordable.
Tulum Suites – Again, the reviews aren’t great, but they’re cheap for being on the beach.
Mid-range $ 100- $ 200
Zamas Hotel – Unique thatched cabins and beach access across the street.
Coco Tulum – Gorgeous white, chic and tropical vibes on a beautiful beach. The only problem is the shared bathrooms. If you want a bathroom, you’ll be spending just over $ 200 a night. Nice beachside location in the middle of the action. Not the best if you are looking for isolation.
Casa Ganesh – Rustic beach hut vibe, great location along the Strip for restaurants and a lovely beachfront location.
Hotel Rosa Del Viento – a beautiful beachfront property with that thatched-roof hut feel with en-suite bathrooms and high reviews. Fairly long towards the south end of the beach, so a longer bike or cab ride to most restaurants, but perfect for seclusion and a more private beach.
Hotel Nueva Vida de Ramiro – Gorgeous beach, rustic beach huts in a great location, great reviews.
Hip Hotel Tulum – A beautiful location towards the south end of the beach with fairly affordable beach bungalows.
Luxury beachfront hotel in Tulum> $ 200
Azulik – The most unusual hotel in Tulum, if not the whole world, this work of art is every photographer’s dream. Each of the 48 distinctly unique villas is intertwined with nature and offers amazing views. However, this expensive hotel is not for everyone; without electric lighting and open to the elements, Azulik defines ecolux. And “Instagram Sensation”. Azulik strangely doesn’t have good reviews. Perhaps this reflects people’s expectation for luxury, when it is indeed quite rustic. Make sure you read their website and reviews for realistic expectations.
Alma Tulum Hotel Boutique – Good reviews, superb beachfront location, outdoor pool.
Coco Tulum – As mentioned before, this hotel has a gorgeous white, chic, and tropical vibe right on the beach. If you want a private bathroom, you will spend a little over $ 200 / night so I put it in both categories.
Hotel Habitas Tulum – For gorgeous seaside glamping, but not necessarily cheap, if a bohemian luxury beach tent is your thing, look no further.
Tagus Tulum-Beautiful Ocean view, these rooms are beautiful. If having a television is important, they have it. They have their own restaurant, in a great location near many restaurants and beach amenities.
The Zebra – If having a pool is important to you (especially a swim-up bar) then this hotel is a great option. A beautiful view of the beach and the restaurant, this hotel has an upscale beach club atmosphere. Some rooms also have private pools and make it one of the best places to stay in Tulum.
The Beach Tulum – Also a nice beach area, this hotel has a pool and some rooms have plunge pools or hot tubs. Excellent reviews. Crazy expensive.
Hôtel La Valise – The decor is beautiful and the location is excellent. With only 9 bedrooms, it feels very private and quaint. It also has a beautiful swimming pool. The reviews are incredible. If I was to come back to Tulum, I would consider booking this hotel.
Be Tulum – A big favorite for good reason. This incredibly chic hotel is beautiful and ideally located. It has a swimming pool and some rooms have private pools. A highly instagrammable hotel with amazing style, I would definitely stay here again. Also, at the southern end of the beach, you feel more isolated.
Nomad – Also a crowd favorite for the bohemian style and vibe, gorgeous decor and a perfect beachfront location. Good breakfast and yoga on site. Even in the far south, where it’s a little quieter.
Casa Malca – For a funky, unique and contemporary art hotel with several large swimming pools, consider this former Pablo Escobar home, now converted to a luxury beachfront hotel. Built in the 1980s for Escobar, the home remained empty after his death in 1993. Purchased, renovated and opened with just 9 rooms in 2015 by a New York art collector, the hotel has been expanded to 42 rooms. Definitely a unique place to see at the southern end of the beach.
Encantada – Encantada is the ideal place to disconnect from everything and live an experience of extreme relaxation on the beach. It is a small “eco-resort” boutique with only eight rooms that offers an incredible view of the ocean. The service will blow your mind and make your trip even better! Be sure to visit their luxury spa while you are here.
Wherever you decide to stay, the city and the beach are there. However, having a beautiful and stylish beach hut in Tulum certainly helps and even if you are not in the best places to stay in Tulum, you will love your stay in Tulum.
