The director of Chichén Itzá, the announcement made by Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, said that the INAH plans to reopen museums, archaeological sites and tourist sites of cultural interest, on September 7th of this year 2020, Chichén Itzá Updates.

On the part of the Institute, the archaeological sites will seek to reduce capacity, staggered schedules for the public and agencies, as well as suggested routes, since the reopening will not be one hundred percent.

Starting in September, the archaeological zones and museums of Mexico will reopen, under the responsibility of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

The reopening will begin on September 7th in a staggered manner, informed the Secretary of Culture, Alejandra Frausto.

The official explained that since March 25, the Ministry of Culture launched the strategy With you in the distance to bring the public closer to cultural content online, in the midst of the health emergency caused by Covid-19.

INAH announced the reopening calendar of the different cultural spaces in the country:

  • —September 2th. The National Museum of Architecture, the mural area of the National Palace of Fine Arts, the Diego Rivera Mural Museum, the National Museum of San Carlos, the National Museum of Art and the Institute of Graphic Arts of Oaxaca reopen.
  • -September 7th. The staggered reopening of museums and archaeological sites of the INAH begins.
  • -September 8th. The José María Velasco Gallery opens, and at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the public will be able to visit the exhibition El Paris de Modigliani.
  • -September 12th. The National Music Library reopens.
  • -September, 17th. Alameda Art Laboratory, Ex Teresa Arte Actual, La Tallera, the Ciudad Juárez Museum of Arts and the Carrillo Gil Museum of Art.
  • -September 18th. The Hellenic Cultural Center begins activities.
  • -September 23th. The Image Center takes up activities.
  • -24th September. The Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo House Study Museum, the National Museum of Printing, the Mexican Plastic Room and the National Museum of Popular Cultures reopen.
  • -September 25th. The Plaza Ángel Salas of the Forest Cultural Center takes up activities.
  • -October 1st. The scenic precincts of the Centro Cultural del Bosque and the Héctor Mendoza Theater, of the National Theater Company, will reopen.
  • -October 3th. The Center for Digital Culture reopens.

Best ways to go to Chichen-Itza

WITH A TOUR: Book a day trip to Chichen-Itza with a tour operator. The tour usually includes transportation, food, entrance to Chichen-Itza with guide and snorkel in a cenote. It is a very good way to enjoy a day trip without having to deal with logistic and organisation. Just be aware that it is a long day starting early.

ON YOUR OWN: Rent a car is the easiest way. The advantage to this option is that you can make your own schedule and decide when and where to stop. It takes about 2,5 hours to drive to Chichen Itza from Cancun or Playa del Carmen. You will have to paid the highway (cost about 385 mexican pesos one way), parking costs 80 mexican pesos.

The ADO bus company offers service from the ADO station in downtown Cancún to Chichén Itzá daily at 8:45 a.m. with a return bus departing at 4:30 p.m. from the archaeological site. According to the ADO website, the journey takes a little more than three hours. If those times don’t work for you, another option is to first take the bus to the town of Valladolid, since there are many more departures throughout the day, and get another bus from there to Chichén Itzá. Bus tickets are available for purchase online through the ADO website, or in person at any ADO bus station in Mexico.
